We have posted a variety of shoes that have been very useful for horses with tendon and ligament injuries in our practice. The most important thing is that the horse has a correct diagnosis. Once you have that, it's much easier to figure out which shoe will be appropriate.

We have provided several options that include keg shoes, handmade shoes and concave shoes.  We encourage Farriers to adapt the shoes as they see necessary for each horse in regard to the horses conformation, the environment the horse lives in and their forging skill and expertise.

There may be some measurements that are specific to an individual horse and they will be provided in the shoeing recommendations that are included on the client's invoice.

These specific injuries have been grouped together:

                                    • Superficial Flexor Tendon or Main Body Suspensory Ligament
                                    • Superficial Flexor Tendon Branch or Suspensory Ligament Branch or Collateral Ligament
                                    • Check Ligament or Deep Digital Flexor Tendon

Superficial Flexor Tendon and Suspensory Ligament Main Body Injuries

The primary goal of treating this type of injury is to allow the heel to penetrate the ground surface and keep the toe above the ground surface. There are many ways to do this, we have given a few examples that should give you a good place to start.

                                    and Collateral Ligament Injuries

The primary goal of treatment for this type of injury is to decrease the amount of tension that is being put on that branch or collateral ligament. To do that, you must keep the affected side of the limb above the ground so it does not have to "stretch" more. A wider branch, section or pad will keep the foot above the ground.

                                    Picture
You can see in this imprint that the narrow side is deeper in the ground and filled with water. The wider branch has kept that side of the foot above the ground surface and has effectively decreased tension allowing the injury to heal.

Check Ligament or Deep Digital Flexor Tendon Injury

The primary goal of treatment for the deep flexor and check ligament is to address breakover and let the toe get into the ground and keep the heels above the ground. That allows relaxation of the tendon and ligament. Because these shoes are applied for a short period of time, during the rehabilitation process, we do not worry much about over stressing the other tendons and ligaments.
