Acupuncture, Chiropractic

Early in Dr. Morgan’s career, she realized the importance and the necessity of taking care of the whole horse. Through extensive training she developed skills that allow her to evaluate a horse in a less traditional but more thorough manner. With that information, she has a distinct array of therapeutic options. Many of her treatments will combine “Eastern and Western” Medicine. Acupuncture and Chiropractic are two primary examples of treatment modalities in use at Morgan Equine.

Dentistry

Most veterinarians don’t like dentistry. Dr. Morgan says she belongs at the front end of a horse!

It’s easy for her because she has invested in excellent equipment, has a safe environment to work in and just plain enjoys dentistry.

She says that it can be one of the best client learning experiences because once a client sees “all the way back there” they have whole new perspective and understanding of what their horses needs are in multiple areas of horsemanship and stable management.

Lameness Evaluation, Diagnostics and Therapies

When a horse comes in for a lameness evaluation, they typically get
an evaluation session with Dr. Morgan and Dallas Morgan. They believe that with a Farrier and a Veterinarian looking at the same thing, at the same time and making decisions together, it saves a whole lot of time and confusion for the client and allows the horse to make progress sooner. Some clients even bring their own Farriers with them. We encourage the clients regular Farrier to be as involved with the problem solving process as much as possible. Once a horse is evaluated, the appropriate diagnostics are performed. That could mean anything from nerve and joint blocks to radiographs or ultrasound. Once a diagnosis is made, therapeutic planning begins. Development of short term and long-term plans with parameters and time lines for progress generates a road map that is critical in solving lameness issues. Horses that need shoeing as a part of their therapeutic regime can have their shoeing done during the same appointment or they can have their regular Farrier do the work at home.

Diagnostic Techniques

Digital radiography offers several advantages over traditional films like high resolution and zoom enhancement enabling better interpretation of radiographic studies of the head, stifle, limbs, neck and portions of the back. The convenience of taking home a copy of the images on disc has revolutionized the radiographic experience.

Ultrasonography is a non invasive technique that uses sound waves to evaluate soft tissue. Sure, it’s useful for tendons, ligaments and random bumps, but joint surfaces, joint pouches and even eyes can be ultrasounded! Other organs that are evaluated with ultrasound are the lung, liver, kidney and lining of the GI tract. The potential seems to be unlimited in the hands of a competent ultrasonographer.

Endoscopy utilizes a fiber optics to evaluate the upper airway of the horse, including the larynx, sinus passages, guttural pouches and upper esophagus. Useful anytime you need a better look at what’s going on inside the head.

Shockwave emits high-energy sound waves to the affected body part where they enhance healing by triggering natural repair mechanisms. Shockwaves have been shown to stimulate bone formation, healing of tendons and ligaments and produce marked analgesia (pain relief).

Ultrasound Clinics at Morgan Equine

If you have unresolved lameness issues that would benefit from further diagnostics, you’ll want to bring your horse to Morgan Equine on Wednesday’s during the months of July through November 2007.

You must be willing to have your horse:
1. clipped in the designated area if needed
2. be video taped during a standard lameness examination of walk and trot at a straightaway and on the lunge line.

A complete ultrasound of the area will be done with reference images and lesions if appropriate printed out for you to take home.

An appointment is necessary

If the horse needs sedation to perform the ultrasound, there will be an additional charge. Sedation charges typically range from $20-$45.00.

It will take approximately one hour to complete the Ultrasound and Lameness exam.

Schedule

July The Hock and Stifle
August The lower front limb and Knee
September The Neck and Back
October The Hip and Back
November The lower hind limb

Therapeutic Horseshoeing

With our lameness evaluation and diagnostic procedures, getting a good start to soundness can happen in one visit.

Dallas Morgan draws on years of therapeutic shoeing experience. While at Kansas State, he developed and perfected a lacerated tendon shoe, had tons of laminitic cases and an excellent opportunity to figure out the navicular horse of the flint hills.

He has a profound understanding of functional anatomy. Add that to an uncanny ability to build and forge any shoe necessary and you have a recipe for therapeutic horseshoeing success.

Remedial Horseshoeing

For everyday shoeing, Dallas travels to private stables to shoe horses about 3 days per week.
Although he likes to shoe sport horses, particularly dressage horses, he also shoes Arab show horses, trail horses, field hunters, show hunters, jumpers, Dutch harness horses, Friesians, Polo ponies, Missouri Fox Trotters, pasture ornaments, draft horses, reining horses, cutting horses, team penning horses, roping horses, barrel horses and when he was in Kansas, some of the worlds best endurance horses.

Of course, he shoes the Morgan Family’s personal horse right on schedule every time and that’s not an easy feat!
