Example of a lameness examination video for consultation
Motion evaluation can be done long distance. Please remember that motion/gait deficits are reduced by 25% on video in my experience.
Here are a few key features of equine videography to capture or request.
1. Links to videos on youtube or other video storage sites are required. Do not send a video as an attachment.
2. First Video: Horse walking straight away and back for 30-50 feet , then trotting 100 feet straight away and back. Must have handler. No artsy views, snorty nostrils and flagging tails are fun, but not very useful. Please limit free range motion (round pen or free jumping), keep it simple and straight forward, like a showmanship class. Try to follow the horse with the zoom so the horse remains the same size and takes up most of the frame.
3. Second Video: Horse lunging to the left at a trot and canter and to the right at a trot and canter, once around each direction/gait is sufficient unless there is a particular question about a gait or direction, then two to three times around is sufficient. It is OK to lunge without a line (round pen) for this evaluation.
4. Third Video: Under saddle minimum. Walk, trot and canter straight away and back, to the left and right one complete 20 meter circle at the trot and canter. Backing up if possible video'ed from either side.
5. Fourth Video: Performing requested task. 3 minutes sufficient.
