Horse Bits:
Some current research and news“bits” to ponder

Link
between Edotoxemia and Laminitis Risk
Hospitalized
horses that have endotexemia are 5 times more likely to develop Laminitis.
Seasonal
Fluctuations in Colic incidence confirmed
Two
distinct peaks from late march to early April and another in October
into November were identified for increased colic occurrence. Large
colon displacements peaked in March and October; Epiploic foramen entrapment
peaked at the end of December. Grass sickness peaked in late April and
Lipomas had no particular season.
No
Predictor Found for Red Maple Toxicity Survival
Most
horses developed kidney damage, laminitis and/or colic, but there was
no link to the odds of survival.
Rib
Fractures Common in Foals
The
causative trauma probably occurs during the birth process and is not
usually a presenting complaint, but the number of foals that are seen
with concurrent rib fractures is high. Studies indicate that ill newborns
should be evaluated for rib fractures. Ultrasound is 4 times more sensitive
than radiography in detecting rib fractures.
Insulin
Resistance, Obesity and Inflammatory proteins linked
Initial
work at UK has linked the 3 issues and will aid in developing strategy
for preventing obesity and insulin resistance.
Dehydration
Test Reliable?
The
skin pinch/fold test came back with mixed results in accuracy. There
was no direct correlation between the results of the skin test and blood
parameters on 130 horses. Horses over 15 years were more likely to have
positive skin pinches regardless of hydration status. There was a link
between heat-stress behaviors (flared nostrils, tripping & increased
respiratory rate) and rectal temperature. Moral of the story, get a
rectal thermometer.
